What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
Registered dietitians, or RDs, are the food and nutrition experts, translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. The expertise, training and credentials that back a registered dietitian are vital for promoting positive lifestyle choices.
When you need food and nutrition information based on fact or need to know how a healthy diet improves health and fights disease—rely on qualified professionals in the field.
Registered dietitians draw on their experience to develop a personalized nutrition plan for individuals of all ages. They are able to separate facts from fads and translate nutritional science into information you can use. A registered dietitian can put you on the path to lowering weight, eating healthfully and reducing your risk of chronic disease. Quoted from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Why choose an RD instead of a Nutritionist?
A Registered Dietitian must complete the following requirements:
In regions where nutrition and dietetics are not licensed or regulated, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, even if they are not qualified. *Beware of people only trying to sell supplements.
- Earn a bachelor's degree with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics
- Complete at least 1200 hours at an accredited, supervised practice program incorporating a healthcare facility, community agency or food-service corporation
- Pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
- Complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration
